Then while the Guinness settled, Catherine started singing the theme of the advert – ‘Dur-Dah! da, da-da, da-da Dur-Dah!’ – dancing next to the table, making some of the same exaggerated movements towards the glass as was in the advert.
From Work of Art
Even though I guess the vast majority of people will not recognise the name of the track or performers, this is one of those tunes that really sound-tracked the 90s in the UK, as it was used for this totally ubiquitous advert for Guinness.
It was one of those ads that went totally viral even before the term was used. I’m pretty sure this was helped by the fact there was a musical screensaver version given away when those things were a bit of a novelty. I remember it spreading like wild fire in one place I worked… I had a particular surreal moment when I walked into an empty office and it started playing, one by one, on every PC there.
There’s a bit of an interesting history to the advert here… I nearly included some of this in the novel, especially the law suits, but realised that it would not really have been widely known at the time.
